ComicPop

I actually thought ComicPop was a pretty cool name for a style of painting.

Alas, I never really did anything with the name.

I started creating these during my abstract period. They became a combination of several things I had been doing for years – the drawing and personality of my portraits, my experience with painting, and the stronger color and experimentation that had come out of the abstract work.

Then I stopped thinking about it so much and just started having fun.

That really became the point of ComicPop.

Lizards, dinosaurs, athletes, vehicles, celebrities – whatever or whoever interested me at the time was fair game. There wasn’t some grand plan behind the series. If I liked the subject and thought I could do something interesting with it, I painted it.

You’ll also see certain people, characters and ideas reappear throughout my work in completely different styles. Albert Einstein is a good example. I’ve drawn him as a portrait, reinvented him in ComicPop and even turned him into a Nutcracker.

Apparently, once I find a subject I like, I’m not necessarily finished with them the first time.
